Southern Hognose Snake hatchling

While Southern Hognose Snakes are not usually as theatrical as their Eastern counter parts, this beautiful little snake was exceptionally photogenic, even by simus standards. These delightful little creatures are one of many species of wildlife endemic to the Scrub Oak Woodlands and sandy, Long Leaf Pine habitats in the Southeast. They are listed as threatened and need all the help they can get to survive. FIre ants have been blamed for much of their demise but habitat destruction is surely more of a factor than anything else. I wish I could buy the entire area and turn it into a big Wildlife Rufuge. Who wants to chip in?
