1978 Toyota Landcruiser BJ40 Hardtop
The first Toyota Landcruiser was the 1951-55 BJ, a 2 door softtop; 3.4 litre 6 cyl diesel.
1955; second generation 20 Series; 2 door softtop and also hardtop, 4 door wagon and pickup. They were 4wd but still had no low range, 3.4 or 3.9 litre petrol 6 cyl.
1960; third generation 40 Series; new body and now with low range.
The F series; 3.9 6-cylinder petrol.
J40; short wheelbase, soft top and light van model. J43; middle wheelbase, J45; long wheelbase.
1973; new door handles and large indicators on fenders.
1974; B series; 3.0 4-cylinder diesel added
1975; petrol engine was up to 4.2 litres
1979; square grille
1980; 4.0 diesel engine
Replaced in 1984 by the FJ70
A more luxurious wagon was introduced in 1967; the FJ55
