Strafing run
Douglas A-26 Invader on a low pass over Vasteras airfield.
The idea of this photo setup began as a result of the owner's repeated request to get photos from when he used pyrotechnics on airshows. That, and a scene from a certain Nicholas Cage movie, resulted in this Hollywood action inspired scene.
The photoship was an Antonov An-28, a Russian cargo plane with sufficient performance and, most important, a suitable photo opening in the rear. We first made a dry run to line up correctly and sync with the pyro technician on the ground. When we had everything in order we flew the wet run. The explosion timing was perfect, almost too perfect. You can see the Invader tilting slightly from the shock wave and we could even feel the heat from the explosion in the photoship.
The memory and the result always brings a smile when I look at it, great fun :-)
