The English Magician

This is 'Just Joey', a truly magical hybrid tea-rose, and one of the greatest roses ever from England.

It is one of the most reliable roses in the world, and it is an absolute magician in the garden, able to flower through storms, heat waves, icy frosts, and armies of rose-attacking insects.

Perhaps its only flaw is that its fragrance is only mild, compared with the red roses such as 'Mr Lincoln' or the purple rose 'Charles de Gaulle'.

'Just Joey' was bred by Roger Pawsey and named in honour of his wife, Joey. The plant was introduced into the United Kingdom by famed English rose growers 'Cants of Colchester' in 1972. 'Just Joey' was inducted into the Rose Hall of Fame as the 'World's Favourite Rose' in 1994.

This particular 'Just Joey' was photographed in the garden of a heritage cottage along Sydney Street (near the corner of Gipps Street) at North Strathfield, in the western suburbs of Sydney.
