The old residence of Levi White (1833 - 1895)

"Residence of Levi White (1833 - 1895).

This massive Victorian structure occupied the block of NW 19th, 20th, Glisan and (facing) Hoyt streets from 1887 until it was taken down around 1914.

It occupied the site of another earlier Portland residence, that of Henry Hewitt residence, later moved around the corner when the White residence was built.

Considered one of the finest homes in Portland, the construction employed some rather unique flourishes, most noteworthy was the unusual and elliptical "tower within a tower" design as shown in this photograph.

White died in 1895 and the property was sold to satisfy the terms of his will. Eventually it became an early version of Dr. Robert Coffey's Sanitarium until he acquired the former residence of Frank A. Knapp in 1914 and relocated Dr. Coffey's Sanitarium to 611 Lovejoy.

The buyers of the White mansion became the Roman Catholic Church who was eager to sell the land to developers with no public outcry except for some who wanted the place reserved for residential use (most noteably Dr. K.A. McKenzie whose residence across the street still stands).

The Couch Elementary School became the buyer and erected the replacing school building at 2033 Northwest Glisan Street in that same year."
