In Memory of Tragedy in Odessa...

"No, not even alien heavens,

Nor the protection of alien wings,

I was with my people then—there

Where they, the wretched ones, were."

- “Requiem” - Anna Akhmatova

Odessa is my hometown. I was born and lived there, part of my life belongs to this beautiful multicultural city by the Black Sea...I still have friends and relatives there... This massacre brought back memories of my family tragedy. During World War II, when Germany had attacked Soviet Union, Odessa was occupied at autumn 1941 by Nazis who started the slaughter of local population. Among the victims were my grandmother and her 3 years old daughter who with thousands of other women and children were burned alive by fascists in barracks at suburban area of Odessa...

The similarity of these two barbaric acts - one that happened in Odessa two days ago, and second - back in 1941, are so obvious and so shocking...! Both of them are the horrible crimes... My heart is full of sadness again...
