Get Better Naomi
Final Project - Get Better Naomi
My name is Katie Jeffries and I have been in digital photography for the past semester. For this project I had to recreate a scene from one of the books I had to read this semester. I reconstructed a scene from book Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. The story is about a girl named Naomi who falls down the stairs, loses her memory and her struggles and efforts of relearning everything that she has forgotten. She has to relearn her friends, studies and family issues while at the same time she has to deal with problems that are happening in the present like a new boy, extracurricular activities and finding out who she is or was.
The scene that I decided to replicate is from the first chapter. It is of Naomi when she is in the hospital after her accident. When she wakes up she receives a letter from her best friend Will Landsman. He has written out a play by play about what had happened leading up to her accident. My picture represents what she is visualizing when reading from the letter. She is seeing her fall and the mysterious boy named James Larkin who came to her rescue holding her camera.
I wanted to keep my overall photo simple. I used few pictures but the techniques make the picture as a whole. On the sick Naomi portion of the photo, at the bottom, I used Photoshop her to make her look sick and that she was actually in an accident. With gradients and layering techniques I made bruises and I used the dodge tool to make her skin appear paler than it already was. I also shot her in with a white background to make her look even more sick and to give the appearance she was in a hospital. The top half of the photo is the most intricate. I separated it with the wavy purple line to help focus the two different pictures. In the picture of Naomi in the upper right-hand corner, I took Naomi outside and took the photo in natural light. In the end all I did was adjusted the colors and I blurred out the edges to give it a dreamlike quality. I also used this technique with the picture of James Larkin in the picture of the left. This character was played by me, so I took the photo separately and simply just Photoshopped myself in the overall photo. When all this was done I duplicated layers to give it a confused look and then I adjusted the colors to certain parts to add to the dreamlike quality.
