Wave of Autumn, Barcaldine.
Today I had to drive to Portree on the Isle of Skye to deliver some cards to outlets that stock them. The round trip was about 350 miles from my home near Oban and with the holiday traffic was slower than I hoped.
Travelling behind convoys of Dutch Camper Vans allowed me a little more time to admire the view, or more importantly the detail. I noticed to my surprise that the Beech trees up here are already taking on their Autumn colours.
I have my Autumn mapped out with visits to Fife, Perthshire, Glen Affric, Ardnamurchan and Torridon mapped out but this is set to start in late September.
I have learned in recent years that trying to react to conditions and choose a location at short notice often leads to less productive work. Far better to go to an area planned ahead of schedule and photograph to suit the given light.
And despite my nagging doubts, trust my instincts, last year Autumn lasted for eight weeks and ended in mid November, if it's starting early we should still have plenty of opportunity to make the most of it.
Whatever, it whetted my appetite so I posted this image made a couple of years ago in woodland up the road from my home.
