Nightwing - Heir to the Demon #14
Barbra’s distraction draws the assailant’s attention away from me as he’s forced to respond in order to block her attacks against him. With him distracted, I manage to reach over and grab both of my sticks before climbing up onto my feet. As both he and Barbra continue to clash with one another, I can’t help but notice something in how the assailant uses his sword.
Every single time that he tries to attack Barbra his sword is in his right hand. Now to some that doesn’t sound like anything at all. So what? He’s right handed, big deal. But the most telling thing is that he never even considers gripping the hilt of sword with both hands. For that to not mean something is impossible. If nothing else, it’s just common sense. Holding a weapon in both hands gives more grip, and that allows you to use more power. The fact that he refuses to do tells me that he uses the two halves of his body for different tasks.
Right to attack. Left to defend.
Definitely not a fighting style you see very often, but it’s not as rare as you’d think. You often see it used by knife wielders especially on the streets of Bludhaven. Then again, that’s probably because it’s difficult to hold a knife in two hands never mind how stupid you’d probably look doing so. As I ready myself, Barbra spots me on the corner of her eye and readies herself to restrain the guard.
I pause briefly to take in a deep breath whilst tightening the grip on my sticks.
With that, I charge forward.
Nightwing: Manoeuvre 7!
The assailant turns in response to my call out and tries to intercept me as I race towards him. Just as manoeuvre 7 intends. With his focus not on her, Barbra uses her bo-staff to disarm him by slamming the staff into his knuckles loosening his grip as I quickly follow up using both escrima sticks to force the sword out of his grip and send it flying across the room. Before he has a chance to react, Barbra delivers the follow up with a blow to the back of the guy’s legs causing him to collapse onto the ground, but not before I slam both of my sticks into his mask knocking him out cold.
Looks like manoeuvre 7 saves the day once again.
With Dick climbing to his feet ready to strike this guy from behind, I need to focus on keeping his attention fixed on me. The last thing I want is to unintentionally compromise Dick’s attack as he unwittingly did for my own just before. That being said, keeping his attention isn’t exactly difficult. With the continuous volley of rapid swipes he keeps taking at me, I’m amazed that one of them hasn’t somehow been lucky and managed to hit me. Either I’m doing a better job at blocking his attacks than Dick, or he’s luring me into a false sense of security.
I’d rather end this fight quickly than find out which one it is.
Come on Dick, hurry up and tell how we’re going to take this guy down.
Nightwing: Manoeuvre 7!
You have got to be kidding me. He has the jump on this guy and could easily take him down himself, instead he wants to go with manoeuvre 7? For goodness sake…..
Before I have a chance to question his decision, manoeuvre 7 begins. The assailant turns and spots Dick racing towards him with his arms raised ready to strike. Guess I have no choice. Manoeuvre 7 it is.
Thanks to Dick’s brief distraction, I slam my staff into the assailant’s knuckles catching him by surprise and momentarily confusing him. The next move is Dick’s and as you’d expect, he executes his favourite manoeuvre perfectly disarming the guard by following up on my strike on his knuckles. My next move is to unbalance him which is done simply by slamming my staff into the back of his legs causing him to lose his center of gravity. Dick then deals the knockout blow by slamming both of his sticks against the guard’s mask sending him flying down to the ground unconscious.
It’s difficult to see the smirk under his mask, but you can tell that Dick is pleased with how well that worked.
Nightwing: And that’s why I always go with manoeuvre 7.
Batgirl: Funny how it only ever seems to get used when the guy is focused on me.
Nightwing: That’s why we’re so well-rehearsed in using it.
Batgirl: You really need to work on your smooth talking.
Nightwing: We’re still by each other’s sides after all this time aren’t we? Clearly it must do some good.
Batgirl: Don’t get ahead of yourself Wing Ding.
Nightwing: It’s Ni……
I just fell for the bait hook line and sinker. Damn it.
Nightwing: Very funny.
Batgirl: I do my best. Speaking of which, what happened to you back there?
Nightwing: I’m clearly not destined to go on the defensive. Maybe trying to change up our styles to confuse them is doing more harm than good.
Barbra glances down at the cuts on both my legs.
Batgirl: We should stitch those up.
She reaches into her belt and pulls out her small medical kit. Before she has a chance to remove anything from it, I grab hold of it before holstering both of my sticks.
Nightwing: We’ve still got a job do. I’ll take care of this.
Batgirl: Dick, I don’t think it’s a good idea.
Nightwing: We’ve got to learn from our mistakes.
Batgirl: But not by making more of them. Especially not tonight.
Nightwing: Relax Barbra, I can handle this. You need to hurry and get this tower offline before the gas reaches the GCPD.
There’s a long drawn out moment of silence between as both. It’s clear as day that Barbra knows she needs to prioritise disabling the tower, but at the same time it’s clear as day that she doesn’t want to leave me on my own. Or she just doesn’t trust me to not screw up stitching up a pair of cuts.
Who am I kidding, it’s because she doesn’t trust my first aid skills no matter how much I try to kid myself that’s concern caused by pure love. I know her too well to kid myself.
Nightwing: Besides, I can’t make it any worse than it already is.
Batgirl: I wouldn’t say that.
Nightwing:Well I managed to not make your wound any worse did I?
Batgirl: No, but Alfred wasn’t exactly impressed with your sewing.
Nightwing: Wait how come Alfred knows?
Batigrl: …..I may have asked Alfred to redo the stitches when we were at the bunker.
Nightwing: Oh. Well for that betrayal you’re definitely shutting this tower off now.
Batgirl: Are you sure?
Nightwing: Barbra, I’ve at this gig longer than you have. Trust me, I know what I’m doing.
Batgirl: Right…….Well radio if you need any help.
Nightwing: Don’t worry. I won’t.
Batgirl: Just…..don’t tell Alfred I let you loose with the sewing kit again.
Nightwing: Scout’s honour!
Hearing that phrase brings a smile to Barbra’s face as she turns away from me and radios in to base for schematics. I doubt Clark would appreciate the fact that fake boy scout image he tries to project whilst in the cape is a joke between both Barbra and I, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.
Now I just need to figure out how the hell I’m going to close both these wounds before Barbra gets back.
