Red Hood - Heir to the Demon #7
Though her hand was jittery and her heart was racing, Scarlett was able to pull the trigger on her taser pistol and fire a shot at both assailants before they made it to her. But much to her horror, both assasailants blocked their respective shots with ease and she could react, their blades swung towards her. Much to her own surprise, she managed to block the first assailant’s blow using her taser pistol. The second assailant’s blow was not as generous.
The blade slashed across her torso faster than she could react. As the pain erupted, Scarlett could do little more than collapse to the ground in pain desperately trying to determine the severity of the wound. From what could be seen, the armour plating in her suit had taken most of the damage leaving her with only a minor cut. Whilst it was difficult to be absolutely certain, the wound seemed little more than a centimetre or two deep.
However, that didn’t stop the pain.
Despite her best attempt to keep calm, remembering how fear had acted as some sick form of pleasure for Pyg when she had been at his mercy, Scarlett couldn’t contain her pain, letting out a faint cry of pain as her hands moved to put pressure on her wound. Much to her horror, as she looked away from her wound to see what her opponents were doing, she noticed one of the assailants readying his blade for a killing blow…..
-------------------------------------
As Roy and I race to the room where the light is emitting from, we both freeze on the spot as we hear a very familiar faint cry of pain. Scarlett! Please don’t let that mean what I think it is. Instinctively, Roy stops following me and draws his bow ready in case there’s an ambush waiting for us behind the door.
Knowing these monsters as well as I claim to, it wouldn’t surprise me if they were using Scarlett to draw both of us into a trap.
It’s exactly what I’d do if I were in their shoes.
In fact, I have done when I used Tim as a distraction when I infiltrated the Batcave to try and kill Bruce.
Arsenal: I don’t like the sound of that. It takes something extreme to make Scarlett scream like that.
Red Hood: I’ll take point.
With Roy ready in case something springs from outside the door, I slowly open and see Scarlett on the ground with her hands pressed down on her chest. She’s injured? Before I can properly see just how injured she is, I see a figure clad in black robes with a blade above their head ready to make a killing blow.
I don’t hesitate before rapidly firing several shots from my taser pistol at him. Having not seen me, the figure collapses to the ground in pain as every single one of my shots hits him. Whilst I race to Scarlett’s side, Roy quickly follows behind and notices a second figure in the room that I should have spotted.
Assailant 2: It can’t be. The master said you were dead…
His surprise causes him to momentarily hesitate before acting. Thankfully, before he's able to launch an attack against Scarlett and I, Roy intervenes with the punch glove arrow of all things.
Red Hood: I thought you hated that thing?
Arsenal: Doesn't mean that it isn't useful. Why do you think I keep it?
Red Hood: Well….
Arsenal: Don’t answer that. How bad is she?
Scarlett: It’s nothing, just a scratch.
Red Hood: A scratch that’s a couple of centimetres deep.
Arsenal: It’ll need stitching.
Scarlett: I’ll be fine. Just give me a minute.
No, she won't be without that wound being closed.
Red Hood: Roy, can you make sure there’s no else?
Arsenal: Gladly.
Roy passes me his medical kit before he moves on into the next room leaving Scarlett and I alone.
Red Hood: What the hell did you think you were doing!?
Scarlett: I was protecting you! These sadistic creatures went out of their way to make a fake corpse of you. If that’s not some sort of weird warning then I don’t know what it is!
Red Hood: I’m not sure exactly what it was either, but the guy Roy took down said something that I couldn’t help but notice. He seemed surprised to see that I was alive.
Scarlett: Why would they be surprised to see you? Surely if they’ve gone out of their way to research every single ally of Bruce why would they be surprised by you?
It suddenly all begins to make sense. There’s a reason why Tim, Dick and Barbra were targeted earlier whilst the three of us weren’t. It’s not because the League doesn’t consider us a threat, or couldn’t track us since we were on the road.
They think I’m dead.
That’s why we weren’t targeted.
Red Hood: Because they think I’m dead. They think Bruce killed me when I attacked the cave.
Scarlett: How could they think that? If they know anything about either of you they that it’s not in character for either for you.
Red Hood: People do crazy things when they’re blinded by rage, Scarlett and they don’t act rationally. We both know that.
Scarlett: Sionis gave us no choice.
Red Hood: Did he? That I’m even asking that says a lot to me.
Scarlett: That you won’t stop questioning what happened says a lot more.
I pause and process what she just said. It all makes sense. Of course it does, when doesn’t she?
Red Hood: What have you done to yourself this time? That’ll need stitching.
Scarlett: It’ll be fine. I need to catch my breath.
Red Hood: Scarlett. Either I stitch up your wound, or Roy does it and you know how h…
Scarlett: Alright fine.
I thought that would be enough to talk some sense into her. It’s not that Roy isn’t good when it comes to applying first aid, but.... when you have to undergo surgery the last thing you want is a surgeon with a shaky hand or twitchy fingers. Mind, his hand may not twitch so much after Barbra tinkered with it. But it's not like Roy usually wants to do first aid anyways. He likes to say that it’s his job to make people need first aid, not administer it.
After I’ve helped lay Scarlett down so she’s flat on the ground, I jab her with a small amount of painkiller before removing the sterilised needle from its packet.
Scarlett: Make sure you get it right.
Red Hood: Relax, I was taught by the best.
That doesn't seem to comfort Scarlett at all.
Red Hood: I’ll try to be as quick as I can.
