The Dark Knight – Heir to the Demon – Prologue – Part 7
Single shot, 50 caliber round. It’s the only round that could pierce through a boarded up window so easily and still have enough force to pierce a body. In order to have that force the shooter could only be at max 1500 meters away. Judging from how accurately his shot hit Talia he must have a thermal scope on his rifle as well. It’s likely he has his sights fixed on me, and yet I still race to Talia before she falls to the ground.
No bullet hole in the wall that I can see. It’s likely the bullet is still inside her. With that I quickly sit her down against the nearby desk. She’s unable to say anything, likely a sign that the shock taking effect. I need to remove the bullet but I can’t do it here without the proper medical supplies to close the wound immediately after I remove it, not to mention that the shooter is unlikely to be alone.
”Talia listen to me.”
”Bruce? Wha…..was….”
”Listen to me clearly Talia. You’ve been shot. Your body is going into shock. I’m going to give you this to counteract the pain.”
Before she can object I remove the syringe from my belt and inject her with the painkiller. It can’t do anything about the bullet but it will keep her conscious so I can keep talking to her. The first bit of advice Alfred gave me following my debut as Batman was that you need to keep the victim talking. Granted I was the victim in that case but it ensured that it was a lesson that I wouldn’t forget.
”Bruce….they’re coming for us….”
”I know.”
”It’s him. It’s…..”
”Ra’s.”
”Leave me Bruce…..I’m not worth….it.”
You can tell yourself that all you want Talia, but it’s not true. You are worth everything to me. I chose to leave you once and regretted it ever since. This time I’m not going to let myself make that same mistake.
As I remove a bandage from my belt and help her to apply pressure to her wound, the front door comes crashing down as two figures clad in black enter the apartment.
They’re here.
”Surrender the woman, deserter. This needn’t concern you.”
Both figures point the tips of their blades towards me. A common tactic taught by the League to assert dominance over an unarmed opponent. Allowing them to see your blade in such close proximity to their person often makes them feel powerless and reminds them that you hold all the cards in this situation.
Unfortunately for them, there couldn’t be anything further from the truth than that last statement.
”She’s coming with me.”
One of the figures take a defensive stance whilst the other keeps the tip of his blade fixed on me. Well at least one of them is smart enough to know that I’m not going to let them take Talia without a fight.
“The master commands otherwise.”
”Well I’m sorry that I have to disappoint him.”
The second figure retracts his blade and takes a defensive stance of his own. Judging from their voices and what I can make out of a body shape it appears they’re both male. Thus they’ll likely favor power over agility. The best method to combating power is to simply outmaneuver your opponent. Easier said than done when engaging two opponents, especially when both opponents are armed and you aren’t.
The figure on the left gives a signal and his compatriot makes the first move. Though everything might appear stacked in their favor I hold the one advantage neither of them possess. I was trained by the Al Ghuls, and they prepared me for situations like this…
