The Dark Knight: Knight of Gotham #54
I’m able to get hold of the blade with both hands and slowly start to force the blade towards his throat. He may be younger and more agile than I am, but he lacks the physical strength to overpower me. Thus I’m able to connect the edge of the blade against his throat causing him to let out a cry of pain. Luckily for him though, he’s able to deliver a strong left hook to my cowl, knocking me back and forcing me to lose my grip on his blade in the process. Fortunately as I’m knocked back, I’m able to make my way towards where my own blade is and whilst Damian takes a moment to inspect his wound, I take the time to pick my blade up off the ground.
“If I didn’t know better Bruce, I’d of said you were deliberately trying to kill me there.”
“Not everyone believes killing to be the only answer.”
“Just the ones that matter eh? Whether it be me, the GCPD or even Marcus Wayne…..”
“…You know what he did…..”
“Of course. Gotham may not know who created the Batman, but I do. We’re both rather fortunate that Ra’s only wanted Thomas and Martha dead aren’t we? If Marcus had been a little blood thirsty that fateful night neither of us would be standing here today.”
“I’m here because of my father. Not because of Ra’s Al-Ghul.”
“Whatever you choose to tell yourself father dear. We both know the truth, at least I’m willing to accept it.”
“You’re not my son.”
“As you like to keep saying. But if you refuse to accept me then what do you consider all those stray dogs you like to take in? You don’t think of them as your sons do you? Surely not when you’re so quick to reject your own flesh and blood.”
“I’m proud to call all three of them my sons. Unlike you.”
“Three of them?”
He’s surprised by the three of them remark? He believes Jason is dead. An interesting development indeed. It seems our attempts to keep Jason’s fate a secret has paid off. If he doesn’t know that Jason is alive and well then that means the league doesn’t now either. Excellent, that means Jason won’t have the league breathing down his neck and he raids Greene’s mansion to find the lazarus neutralising agent.
“Jason’s alive?”
I take a moment to smile. As you’d expect that unnerves him. For some reason the image of me smiling always tends to alarm people. Hal always claims it’s the first sign of the apocalypse when I start to smile.
“Yes. Jason’s alive. He’s out there right now making preparations necessary for when Ra’s comes for me once I've dealt with him.”
“Unexpected. What preparations?”
“I’ve sent him to Jay Greene’s mansion. Home to the last pure source of Lucifer on the planet.”
The look of his face quickly turns from one of shock to one of horror. Evidently he knows all about Lucifer and for good reason. The name Lucifer comes from the phrase commonly used to describe the chemical. Lucifer inferno. Latin for hell bringer. For the longest time they wanted to call the compound Lucerno, a hybrid of the two words used to describe the compound. In the end though Lucifer ended up sticking as it's name primarily referencing the idea of the fallen angel. If only to reference the brief high you get from ingesting the compound before it takes it drags you down to hell.
For the longest time Lucifer was merely considered a powerful hallucinogenic, providing a powerful kick at first, but then forcing your own personalised living nightmare to play out before you. Needless to say, the compounds reputation for psychologically scarring anyone unfortunate enough to ingest it quickly led to it being put out of circulation. It wasn't until the Second World War where the Nazi science division actually considered weaponising the compound that it made a reappearance. Fortunately the Allies were able to stop the compound from being weaponised destroyed all evidence of the compound in the hopes it would never be discovered. Heck if Professor Milo hadn’t managed to get his hands on a pure sample of Lucifer I would never of known of it's existence, neither would his post-doc student Jonathan Crane, more commonly known these days as the Scarecrow. A shame really that Crane chose to use it to create several strands of his infamous fear toxin. Thanks in part to him there is hardly any Lucifer left on the planet.
Despite it's hallucinogenic properties, Lucifer has an expected side effect. It’s able to force the body to expel all unnatural chemicals with in it. The first people to ever record using the chemical claimed it forced you to confront your inner demons and repent your sins. Remarkably though, it's also able to neutralise any form of Lazarus within the human body by catalysing the natural decomposition of the compound. Normally it would take years for Lazarus to be fully purged from the body after initial exposure. Thanks to Lucifer the decomposition occurs in a matter of minutes.
You can tell why Lucifer is said to be one of the few things Ra’s has ever truly feared. Even to the point that during his early years Ra’s went on a quest to purge all traces of Lucifer on the planet during his rise to power. After all, when you have an immortal army at your command, the last thing you want is for your army to become mortal. Heck I can't help but speculate that by this Ra's has been immersed in lazarus for so long exposure to Lucifer would kill him without the pit’s healing factor to sustain him.
“That’s right. I said Lucifer, and that means when Ra’s finally decides to come for me I’ll be ready.”
“Not if I deal with you first.”
His tone is far more serious than before. No doubt recognising the size of the threat I pose to the league if I have Lucifer in my possession. Hopefully Jason’s managed to acquire it. I haven’t heard anything from him since I instructed him and his outlaws to acquire a sample from Jay Greene’s mansion. All I can hope is that his silence is due to some fault with their comms or something. The last thing I want is to lose him again.
I look up to see the Knight charging at me in anger. Presumably it’s because of the threat I now pose to Ra’s, after all if he’s unable to defeat me and Ra’s passes away then control of the league doesn’t pass to him at all. It would pass to either Talia or Nysa given their position as children of the Demon.
He slams his blade against mine with all the force he can muster, he’s almost able to throw me off balance with the amount of force behind his swing but I’m narrowly able to keep my footing. Enough is enough. It’s time to end this.
