The Dark Knight: Knight of Gotham #52
We both quickly grab hold of our blades and charge forward at one another. As our blades clash Damian begins to laugh to himself, lord only knows why.
“I wonder if old Jimbo has recognised I brought him flowers in hospital the morning after I removed his hand. He can see me from that tower of yours right?”
Evidently he's aware that I allowed Jim and his men to set up a lookout post from the roof of Wayne Tower. It has the potential to be bad news but for the moment I choose to pay it no attention. Jim's kept a constant watch on City Hall pretty much since the moment it was taken. There's little chance Damian has had a chance to sabotage the tower in someway.
“….”
“Oh don’t give me the silent treatment whilst you try to piece it all together. Whether you want to believe it or not, I am who I claim to be. Father.”
“That remains to be seen.”
“Come now Bruce, we both know you’re not going to have a chance to confirm it when this is all over.”
“I beg to differ.”
“Oh fighting words. Good to see you’re planning on going down fighting. It’ll make my victory all the more glorious.”
As he continues to monologue to himself I punch his chin with my left arm knocking him back briefly.
“Playing dirty I see. Well, two can play that game. Let’s see what Jimbo thinks when both the Crimson Knight and the Batman are unmasked for all of Gotham to see.”
He charges forward again with his blade aiming for my right hand, no doubt intending to either cause me to lose the grip on my blade or to maybe even simply lose my hand. It's hard to tell whether this is a legitimate attempt to disarm me or merely a distraction to force me into giving him an opening to reach for my cowl. Fortunately I’m able to avoid either situation by moving out of the way of his slash as the momentum of his swing forces him forward. I seize the moment and take a swipe at his face. My blade connects with his face and it appears to cut deep. However deep the cut is, it causes him to draw blood and he quickly steps back covering the wound. It hurt, that much is obvious, but is it healing?
All I can do now is hope that the deal I made with Hephaestus was worth it. Has the blade neutralised it?
“Nice move. A shame it won’t leave a mark.”
He turns to face me, but to my surprise it doesn't appear to be healing. The blade appears to have done it's job as Hephaestus claimed it would. No wonder Diana's sword is such a feared weapon if this is what he can make in a couple of hours.
“I'm afraid it will.”
“Oh? Why’s that?”
Even after I've managed to wound him, the smugness persists. How can any son of mine be so smug?
“Have you heard of the Greek god Hephaestus?”
“The forger? Naturally. You know the League takes note of all deities that people claim to believe in.”
Whether his claim to being my son is legitimate or simply a deception has yet to be determined but there can be no denying that he has connections to the League. Only those that are a part of the League know it’s methods. Anyone else unfortunate enough to learn of their methods generally don’t have enough time left to tell others.
“I have some friends in interesting places. One of them was able to get him to forge this blade exactly to my specifications.”
“Wonder Woman no doubt. So go on then, what’s so special about this blade he forged you?”
“The blade is enchanted. Specifically with an enchantment that hinders the healing process of any one it wounds. Even if their body is full of Lazarus.”
Evidently Damian has at least some belief in this as he immediately checks the wound. To his horror it hasn’t begun to heal. Terrible news for him. Great news for me. Looks like the deal was worth it.
With his accelerated healing neutralised we’re on an even playing field. He bleeds as I do now. The lazarus in his body is worthless. With that I slowly begin to approach him with my blade raised ready. The advantage is mine and it's time about time I use it...
