The Dark Knight: Fallen Son #20

I remain silent much to Jason’s annoyance. He pulls the trigger but his aim fails him. It always was one of his weakest areas. This gives me all the time I need. I reach into my belt and drop a smoke pellet down. It does little more than act as distraction but it’s enough to force Jason to empty his gun of some additional bullets as he desperately tries to hit me in his blindness. I take this moment to escape into the shadows of the cave. Jason won’t know this but not too long ago I had supporting rafters installed into the caves roof. It’s been my greatest fear that one day someone would learn of Bruce Wayne’s identity as the Batman and they would assault the cave. It’s taken me years but I finally have those necessary fail safes in place. With the rafters at my disposal I have the edge.

The perks of home field advantage. That’s why I chose the cave over Arkham for hiding the Joker. I know Arkham like the back of my hand, but the cave gives me all the advantages I could need.

“Ohhhh Bruce. You brought him here, didn’t you? You brought the clown here? After everything he’s done, and after everything I’VE done, HE’S the one you save, and I’m the one you’re trying to take down.”

I want to try and talk to Jason, try to open his eyes but I know that will only serve to compromise my position. Jason scans the roof attempting to spot me, but he won’t and he knows that.

“Well…looks like I’m just going to have to destroy everything you own on top of the imposter and your dead butler.”

He reaches into his pouches and pulls out a grenade. He’s a walking armory it seems. He proceeds to assault various aspects of the cave by detonating a grenade next to them. First he takes down one of the support pillars as well as destroying most of the batcomputer. The damage looks far worse than what it actually will be. The hard drive is built into the cave wall to protect it from such damage. The worst damage will be the damage done to the screen and the interface controls but those can be easily replaced.

“Bruce I’ll destroy every single last thing you’ve put the prefix of ‘bat’ in front of until you come out! Just come out now and face me like a man. Alfred and the imposter are dead. Now…it’s time for us to join them. You, me, and the clown.”

He wants me to assault him. That’s what this all centers around. He can’t shoot me if he can’t see me and it’s driving him mad. His next target is the batmobile, but he checks for me again before he prepares to destroy the car he always dreamt of riding in when I first took him on. How times change. I feel tempted to activate the batmobiles emergency defence systems. One blast from a riot round would be sufficient to incapacitate him, but there’s just too much risk for a blast at such close range.

He destroys the batmobile without a second thought and it breaks my heart to see him do such a thing. What has Ra’s done to you Jason.

After the batmobile he turns his attention the display case. No. He wouldn’t. Not that.

That’s what I told myself.

He unloads the remainder of his bullets into the display case and rips the suit apart. No. No more.

This has gone on enough.

He’s taken Alfred.

He’s taken Tim.

And even with all that he wants more.

It’s all clear to me now.

This monster stood in the cave may look like Jason.

But he’s not Jason.

Jason died that night five years ago.

This monster stood in the cave is just a creation of hatred from the mind of a twisted clown and the leader of a league of killers.

This ends now.

I leave my perch and strike from the shadows.

“NO MORE!”

I punch him straight in his head and smash the Red Hood helmet with my strike. The helmet fragments and shards of it cut his face.

“That's enough Jason.”

“You’re right, that is enough. Tonight’s the end for us Bruce. Both of us. But I’m going down swinging.”

He swings for me wildly hoping to harm me, but it’s to no avail. I dodge and deliver another blow, this time his jaw. That should guarantee his silence from now on. The punch does it’s primary purpose of delivering him great pain, but not in silencing him

He rises from the ground and charges straight at me knocking us both over the ledge down to the docking bay in front of the burning remains of the Batmobile.

This ends tonight you monster. You won’t dishonor my son any longer…
