The Dark Knight: Fallen Son #4
I leave the rooftop and quickly return to the batmobile. Can’t believe I’m calling it that, Dick would never get over it. I’m later than I expected to be thanks to my diversion. I should feel worried, but given what Loeb has done to persecute me during my campaign against crime in this city it’s no surprise that have no interest really. Were it not the right thing to do I would probably not even bother trying to save him. He’s some of Gotham’s worst scum, even Carmine Falcone would agree with that, and he’s the one who pays him off.
It takes a couple of minutes before I arrive at the warehouse. Warehouse 49. The same Warehouse I confronted Eckhart in two years ago. The past sure seems to have a habit of repeating itself. I confronted my Parent’s killer in the Monarch Theatre, where I saw them die. Now I’m going to save Commissioner Loeb from the same warehouse I first dealt with one of his corrupt cops. It’s like a bad fairy tale story.
Fortunately with having already infiltrated this warehouse I know the best way in.
I enter the building and I come to the room that the mystery assailant is in. Another man accompanies him. Medium build, I reckon 160 pounds. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Strike to the chest will knock the breath out of him allowing a follow up knock out blow. Seems simple enough. Before I can make my move though the beam underneath me gives way. Amateur move. I just have myself away.
“What the hell do you think that was boss?”
“Our guest, dear Bob.”
No sooner does he say those words that he pulls out a submachine gun from a crate next to him. He immediately follows up by opening fire towards my position. I knew that beam was rotten two years ago when I perched on it to observe Eckhart’s deal two years ago, I should have known it would have been in worse condition now than it was back then. Now because of my oversight I’ve compromised my presence. Fortunately this is a multilayered warehouse, and since he’s on the ground floor I’ve got lee way to slip away out of sight.
It’s a fruitless endeavor though. I may be hidden from sight but he knows I’m here now; I’ve lost the most important element of all. The element of surprise.
“Well well, looks like the big scary bat doesn’t want to come out and play. Bob, go keep good old Gillian company will you.”
“But he’s…”
“Now Bob!”
“Yes sir.”
The goon walks off out of the room. It’s clear he’s going to defend the Commissioner, means I can’t sneak off from this fool now, as he’ll almost certainly run to intercept me. Looks like I’ve got no choice now. I’ll have to take him down. Better make this quick.
“Hey diddle diddle. The cat and the fiddle, the man shoot at the roof. But all he wanted is to kill the cat, but hey ho I’ll settle for shooting a bat. Now come on winged rat, I’ve got smiles to bring to people by killing off the problem of the mean old bat.”
That’s a terrible rhyme. But the rhyme is the least of my worries as he reaches into his pocket and pulls a hand grenade. Great. It’s going to be one of those nights….
