MY OLD HARLEY 2nd Harley 1948 74 CI Panhead-Tank Shift. Sold it a long time ago. Wish I still had it.

This is the second Harley I owned. I rode it for a few years before I got another ; my third Harley. At that time you could ride a tank shift in Chicago with little problem. Traffic and drivers didn't crowd you like driving today.

This machine was bought as a basket case and I put it together. Made the front axle, changed the front wheel, Made numerous other parts.

In 1967 I got my first Harley. It was a 1948 , 45 CI Flathead Tank Shift. I learned how to ride on a hand shift (tank shifter) .

I rode it home and around the block a few times, and I promptly took off for Wisconsin Dells.

I came home, three days later, cold, sore, tired , hungry and wet.

The disturbing part is that I kept on doing it.

Definition of insanity .

The repetition of an action over and over and expecting a different result.

That was 52 years ago, and I still do it. Not as far, not as long, but I still do it.

Later on in my riding history, I switched over to BMW and Moto Guzzi. You could go further, faster on them.

Tried a Gold Wing, Physically too large and you couldn't pick it up if you dropped it.

The people that you meet and the places you see are priceless.

I have done the Four Corners of the US, and almost everywhere in-between, Canada, some of Mexico. and the Isle of Man.

Would I do it all again ?

YOU BET.
