Atlas Tool Box Company, Chicago IL, wood tool box, recently restored , from mid 1930's
This tool box was in pretty poor shape when it finally found it's way to my shop. It was missing one drawer and two other drawers were broken with missing pieces.
The box was coated and sticky with old black cutting oil, probably from being in a screw machine shop somewhere.
Box was cleaned with Ammonia and 0000* steel wool Made one drawer Oak Face and close grained pine sides and back. Drawer bottom was made from 1/8" thick, 5 Ply Birch Plywood.
Other drawers missing and broken sides were made from the close grained pine also.
The interior was lined with Green Stiff Felt from a local craft store.
Box was finished with Semi Gloss Varnish. Three coats, block sanded to level out the grain and fill. A finish coat of wiping varnish was then applied to even out the finish tone and reflectivity.
I still have to make the box's front door , I had to switch off to the next project, the Steady Rest for Lou's wood lathe, seen in the next two pictures.
