1940-41 WWII destroyer HMAS VOYAGER [I] possibly at Alexandria - Ross Gillett Collection.
5140. A sea boat leaves HMAS VOYAGER seen here in what appears to be Alexandria, with an interesting but unidentified ship under awnings in the background - possibly one of the seized French vessels. It looks like a cruiser.
VOYAGER and her sister HMAS VAMPIRE [I] had reached Malta for Mediterranean service on Christmas Eve, 1939, and with HMAS WATERHEN she would pioneer the famous 'Tobruk.Ferry Service' on May 5 and 6 in 1941.
After many adventures, but pretty much worn out, VOYAGER would leave the Mediterranean on one engine on July 24 1941.
Photo: Credited Ross Gillett Collection, the photo [cropped] appears in Ross's book 'Australian and New Zealand Warships 1914-1945' [Doubleday, Sydney 1983] p104. This wider version is also held in the RAN Archives, Navy Heritage Collection, image NO. 02627
