Circa 1946-1947: HMAS HOBART [I] in Sydney with X turret landed - RAN Historical.
4858. Sitting at the RAN's NO. 1 buoy at the entrance to Farm Cove, we see the Modified Leander Class cruiser HMAS HOBART [I] as she emerged from a long 1946 refit at Cockatoo Island Dockyard [May 1-Sept 1, 1946], with her main armament reduced. The 6-inch gun X turret has been removed. Thanks to comments contributor Les Robert for the dating and details as published in Ross Gillett's book 'Australian and New Zealand Warships from 1946 [Child and Associates, Sydney 1982].
For a long time we had mistakenly believed that X turret had been removed in HOBART's aborted three year conversion to a training cruiser at Strate Diockyard, Newcastle, carried out between 1952 and 1955, but never completed, as a cost of one million pounds, a huge sum then. The four months refit out in 1946 also seems to have been a serious waste of money as she placed into reserve on Dec. 5, the following year, and was in fact never to go to sea under how own power again.
As we will eventually learn in future Entries, however, the RAN's plans for the cruiser's future were extremely muddle-minded and kept changing throughout these Cold War years.
On the changes carried out in the 1946 refit when X turret was removed, we have also gathered together several images from the preceding year or so for comparison purposes. Here they are:
