Circa 1942: Armed Merchant Cruiser HMAS MANOORA in Sydney prior to her landing ship conversion. Photo RAN.
3897. The Adelaide Steamship Company 's 10,856 ton coastal liner M.V. MANOORA was requisitioned on October 11, 1939, and commissioned as an Armed Merchant Cruiser on Dec. 12.
As an AMC she carried seven 6-inch guns, two 3-inch AA, two Vickers light machine guns and a Seagull V aircraft.
MANOORA seemed to retain her merchant colours in the early part of the war. The photo above may be taken about Sept 30, 1942, when she returned to Sydney for conversion to a Landing Ship Infantry. Strange how the 'Grey Funnel Line' colours make the ship look more 'businesslike.'
Photo; RAN, it appeared in the late Lew Lind's book 'The Royal Australian Navy: Historic Naval Events Year By Year' [Reed Books, Sydney 1982] p99.
