HMAS ANZAC [III] FROM INSIDE OUT: A Sikorsky S-70B 2 Seahawk anti-submarine helicopter from the flying control position - Graeme Andrews.

3571. One capability that the destroyers and escorts of earlier eras never had was air. The RAN has acquired 16 Sikorsky S-70B 2 anti-submarine helicopters carried by HMAS Anzac [III] and her sister ships.

It is the navalised version of the Blackhawk combat helicopter] and in various confurations can handle anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), naval special warfare (NSW) insertion, search and rescue (SAR), combat search and rescue (CSAR), vertical replenishment (VERTREP), and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC). All Navy H-60s carry a rescue hoist for SAR/CSAR missions.

On the 1966 three-day Brisbane-Sydney voyage that Graeme Andrews was aboard, Anzac [III] was conducting trials for its Seahawk, which was then new to the RAN.

*The term used here S-70B 2 refers to the particular export version of the USN's SH-60 helicopters acquired by the RAN.
