FLEET AIR ARM DAYS: Gannet undercarriage tests on MELBOURNE [II], Ca. 1963 - Ron Marsh.

2973. Using an external hydraulic power supply, this aircraft suspended from HMAS MELBOURNE's crane is undergoing some undercarriage retraction tests after experiencing problems in the air.

Potentially, it can be a very serious problem.

On February 20, 1961, Lt [P] G. O'Day, RAN of 725 Squadron had his undercarriage let down during a single-engine flypast at RANAS Nowra, suffered an engine stall, and landed in a tree.

Fortunately noone was injured in that incident but the aircraft was reduced to components.

This story, and quite a number of others, can be gleaned from a website listing serial numbers of Australian Defence Force aircraft, and detailing their fates. The page listing many of the RAN's 36 Fairey Gannets - the anti-submarine models - is here. Sadly, it also lists a number of fatalities - six, we believe - in Gannet crashes.
