Circa 1936-1939: HMS ACHILLES at Aotea Quay, Wellington - Sydney Charles Smith [1888-1972] ATL, NZ.

2911. Soon to achieving lasting fame as a participant in the Battle of the River Plate, HMS ACHILLES is seen here as a New Zealand-manned Royal Navy Station cruiser.

 

The Royal New Zealand Navy was not promulgated until October 1941.

 

ACHILLES had visited Australia for its sequicentenary celebrations in 1938,

While the photograph above is taken by one of New Zealand's finest maritime photographers, Sydney Charles Smith, was also had some exceptional views of ACHILLES in Melbourne taken by A.C. Green in this period.
