Aug. 8 1938: HMAS VOYAGER [I] powers astern into mid-stream - Coffs Harbour City Library.
2617. Built by Alex Stephen and Sons at Govan Scotland, the 1,188 tons standard HMS VOYAGER was completed for the Royal Navy on June 24, 1918.
Hence she and her sisters were already 15-16 years old when transferred to the RAN, initially on loan, in 1933. The ships, VOYAGER, VAMPIRE, VENDETTA , WATERHEN, and the Scott Class flotilla leader HMAS STUART arrived in Sydney in December that year.
Despite their age, the group were to achieve undying fame as 'The Scrap Iron Flotilla' on the Tobruk Ferry run in the Mediterranean during WWII.
HMAS VOYAGER was to be lost when she ran aground in Betano Bay, Timor on September 23, 1942, while landing Australian commandos on the Japanese-occupied island.
