Louvre Sphinx

Possibly dating to the Old Kingdom (c. 2600 BC) this sphinx was discovered in 1825 at the Temple of Amun in Tanis. Precise dating of the monument is difficult because it was used and re-used by Pharaohs over a number of years. A sphinx such as this is meant to represent the relationship between the Sun God (the lion) and the king (the face).
