XTC684 - Leyland Atlantean prototype 1954

This is the basis of most modern day buses.

Leyland stumbled upon a real winner when they came up with this one.

The tiny engine is tucked away, hardly noticeable, at the back, yet, surprisingly, this is a traditional 1950's half cab design, with the usual space for the engine at the front.

The lower deck ceiling has a pronounced curve and an innovative, sliding door takes you into the drivers cab.

So futuristic, yet, in some ways, old hat, this vehicle proved the success of rear engine and drivetrain technology, leading the way for the Volvo's, Scania's, Enviro's etc, being manufactured today, over 50 years later.
