The view inside

Continuing our historic Edinburgh garage tour we view the 'floor' at Longstone garage in 1966. Visible are buses being prepared for service 3 which back then worked from nearby Saughton Mains to Gilmerton Colliery, so linking western and southern suburbs with Princes Street and The Bridges.

To the fore is fleet 352, new to London Transport in 1945 but re-bodied in 1953 by Duple/Nudd and Lockyer with 53 seats and a curved valance at the nearside front. Improvements were made in an attempt by Edinburgh Corporation to 'standardise' the fleet. 60 of these arrived at Central and Gorgie depots but when Longstone garage opened in 1955 nearly all this fleet were moved here for services 3, 4, 33 and 44 with a few retained at Central for service 14. Around the Guy are Leyland Titans 3 of the 601 series new in 1962 and an older Leyland Titan (fleet 468) of 1954. Note advert for R L Rae a well known shopfitting company based at Westwood, West Calder. We can just see against the wall to the left a new Leyland Titan PD3A/2 which with a higher capacity of 70 seats enabled withdrawal of the Guys by 1969. Service 3 was much older than the garage having originated as an electric tram route between Stenhouse and Newington before being part of the first abandonment of tram services in 1953.
