All Leyland on the 25

In their first realistic attempt to replace trams Edinburgh Corporation purchased Leyland PD2/12 Titan double deckers - known as the All-Leylands. These were the forerunners of a huge order for further Titans albeit with MCW bodywork. They had 56 or 58 seating, fleet 253 has the latter although most were upgraded to 59 seats around the time that standard fronts were fitted (as seen in this picture in 1965).

Adverts were carried on all Edinburgh buses, we see on the nearside an ad for Lofty Peak flour whose Chancelot Mills at Bonnington employed a large workforce. 253 is well laden on the popular 25 route which operated between Eastfield and Corstorphine, serving Seafield Road and Leith Links - following old tram route 25. Our bus is working out of Marine garage, just opposite we see newer Leylands, 425 and 633 on services 26 and 33 working out of Longstone garage and in the background the well-known R W Forsyth clothing store, built in 1906 and the first steel framed building in Scotland but closed in 1983.

With the arrival of numerous Atlantean buses in the late 1960's these Titans were withdrawn by 1970, some moving on to other operators - such were their reliability and popularity. It's very doubtful if any other livery scheme suited them as much as Edinburgh's iconic colours !
