Sporangia of Polytrichum commune moss

Full-size, for Kathy .....

Polytrichum commune (also known as Common haircap moss, Common hair moss, great gold headed or Great Goldilocks) is a species of moss found in many regions with high humidity and rainfall. It is widely distributed throughout temperate and boreal latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere and also found in Mexico, several Pacific Islands including New Zealand, and also in Australia. It typically grows in bogs, wet heathland and along forest streams. (Wikipedia)

These are the golden, hairy, 'calyptra', which on tis species of moss, completely envelop the fruiting body. They will eventually drop off, revealing the spore bearing sporangium.
