There was a large outcrop of rocks at the top of the beach. This one was about 8 feet high and probably 14 feet across and it was entirely covered in these crustose lichens. The black lines (prothallue) are demarcation lines which define individual lichens. Most of thes are the same species, but there are lots of individuals as you can see. I find them fascinating, and very beautiful.
