Michigan State Police - 100th Anniversary 2016 Dodge Charger AWD ~ 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine producing 370HP ~ Plate #2017.

Plate #20 was used for District assigned cars for Hometown Security team and motors before they got assigned back to posts. MSP vehicles first two digits typically denote post or unit TD "Training Division", K9, etc.

This is one (1) of fifty (50) 2016 Dodge Chargers with all 30 Posts receiving at least 1 patrol car. The paint scheme honors Michigan State Police's 1st Patrol cars which were 1937 Ford Model 74 patrol cars.

Black & Gold was the standard police markings until 1954, when they were changed to the current blue color.

Commissioner Joseph A. Childs led the color scheme change in 1954. The color was changed to a bright shade of blue that remains standard today. Uncomfortable with the "gaudy" new patrol car, Troopers dubbed it the "Blue Goose" in parody of a well-known commercial bus line of that time.

How did MSP Blue come to be you might ask. Well from the son and granddaughter of Commissioner Childs.

"Michigan State Police Blue........a very unique color that was mixed right at the East Lansing Headquarters of the Michigan State Police shortly after my father was appointed to the office of Commissioner by Gov, G. Mennon Williams ... The color was mixed by one of the in house State employees from the maintenance dept... when dad saw the color he knew immediately that this was the color he intended for all new Police Cars. Dad met with Henry Ford and showed him this color. Ford motor company attempted to duplicate the color but could not get it exactly to match, so Henry Ford himself met with my Dad in East Lansing and dad introduced Henry Ford to the employee (I am not sure of this but I believe the employee was Arnold Renner in Maintenance) anyway that is the story of the Famous Blue on the Michigan State Police Cars since 1953."

Since 2000 Ford has referred to Michigan State Police Blue PPG #191061 as Royal Blue or Michigan Blue depending on year. Dodge since 2008 has refereed to it as Code P79 Michigan Blue.
