Carbon Arc says: Over two decades ago, I visited this now-closed theatre to borrow a xenon lamp for an emergency lamp change at a nearby museum which ran the same model of Christie lamphouse shown in this picture.

Carbon Arc says: The theatre I freelance at for two local film festivals has similar Xetron consoles. That theatre went digital over six years ago but was not contractually obligated to yank their 35mm equipment, which now mostly sits idle nowadays except in a few screens during film-festival time.

Carbon Arc says: There's pure emotion in this excellent picture of classic equipment probably left to rust in an abandoned facility.

Carbon Arc says: I don't know if these were licensed versions or knockoffs, but these Westrex lamphouses in this Aussie booth appear to be based on Peerless Magnarcs made in the USA in the 1930s and ’40s.

Carbon Arc says: At first glance it looks odd, but doing a test-run when time is available to do so is a great insurance policy. The description and comments explain this further and give a great introduction to this classic method of projection, updated for the xenon age.

Carbon Arc says: Forced to replace their carbon-arc equipment with more modern xenon equipment when carbons and parts for the lamphouses became increasingly hard to find, some theatres put retired machines in lobbies as museum pieces, like this one.

Carbon Arc says: Drive-in theatres, mostly independent operations, have staged a small renaissance over the last decade or so. The threat of studios discontinuing 35mm film print distribution by the end of 2013 may be stalling this rebirth as drive-in operators across the country debate whether to go digital or, due to the significant expense of conversion, just go out of business.

Carbon Arc says: In heaven there are 35mm projection consoles, along with their more vintage cousins from the changeovers-and-carbon-arcs era, all sent to their own great reward by this steamroller that was the digital projection conversion.

Carbon Arc says: When I put this gallery together, I wasn't thinking of 35's bigger brother, 70mm, partially because projectors were designed to show either 35mm or 70mm with a component swap and altered threading. Here, a Century JJ, specially rebuilt and provisioned as a 70mm-only machine, is readied for specially-arranged 70mm screenings of The Hateful Eight. When the concept of 70mm releases fizzled out with the 1990s introduction of digital soundtracks and better 35mm film stock, these 35/70 projectors still soldiered on as the best type of projectors to run 35mm on.
