Carbon Arc says:
Drive-in theatres, mostly independent operations, have staged a small renaissance over the last decade or so. The threat of studios discontinuing 35mm film print distribution by the end of 2013 may be stalling this rebirth as drive-in operators across the country debate whether to go digital or, due to the significant expense of conversion, just go out of business.
Carbon Arc says:
When I put this gallery together, I wasn't thinking of 35's bigger brother, 70mm, partially because projectors were designed to show either 35mm or 70mm with a component swap and altered threading. Here, a Century JJ, specially rebuilt and provisioned as a 70mm-only machine, is readied for specially-arranged 70mm screenings of The Hateful Eight.
When the concept of 70mm releases fizzled out with the 1990s introduction of digital soundtracks and better 35mm film stock, these 35/70 projectors still soldiered on as the best type of projectors to run 35mm on.
