Autotransformers, absolutely! -[ SoS ]-
In my attempt to showcase atypical items with names starting with the letter A, I dug up two autotransformers. Unlike a typical transformer, using two coils and relying on electromagnetic principles to do its thing, an autotransformer does the job with one coil and no electromagnetism.
The devices shown here are actually variable autotransformers, used for AC power and offering an infinite voltage control range compared to standard fixed-tap autotransformers. Electronic circuits do perform similar duties to these in a much more compact package; in some applications, however, not as well as these reliable old-school devices, if at all.
