Barefoot Beatle -[ HMM ]- >>Explored<<
Detail from the well-known LP cover to the Beatles' penultimate album, Abbey Road, of Paul McCartney's bare right foot behind Ringo Starr's shod one.
The shoeless McCartney, as well as his walking out of step with his Beatles bandmates, were just two of many elements in the Paul is Dead urban legend that originated in a quickly-debunked early-1967 rumor, then resurfaced with vigor for a few months right after the fall-1969 release of Abbey Road. Those helping fuel the hoax termed the Beatles crossing the street on the album cover a “funeral procession,” and even saw symbology in the license plate on the Volkswagen Beetle in the picture.
Twenty-four years later, a still very much alive and fully-shod McCartney would parody the cover and mock the old conspiracy theory, even down to the license plate on a similar VW Bug, on his 1993 Paul Is Live album.
