Better light, better sight, worse electric bills.

An old (late 1960s–early '70s) General Electric (USA) sleeve I found in a lecture hall undergoing renovation, for a 200-watt incandescent lightbulb.

Such a power-hungry bulb was recommended for use in table lamps endorsed by the Better Light, Better Sight Bureau, a now-defunct organization promoting bright lighting for reading and other tasks, presumably meaning more revenues for electric utilities. (I shudder to think about the amount of power consumed to light dozens of these bulbs in the lecture hall before it was retrofitted with fluorescent lighting.) Nowadays, an LED table lamp can crank out as much brightness as those old energy-hog bulbs for less than one-tenth the power consumption.
