Female Red-bellied Woodpecker in all of her beauty ! Glenola North Carolina - Randolph County
For the last year the Red-bellied Woodpeckers have played a game with me. When I am in the house they come to the trees outside to eat suet, woodpecker bar and sunflower seeds but when I am set up outside they fly into the top of the trees then take off. Finally this female gave me a chance to get a few shots of her. I did get to watch the family and three juveniles which may be unusual I need to read up and see. The juveniles would come flying into the trees chasing each other and really make a racket but it was fun watching them but I could never get a good capture. I will tell you each one had a different color on their heads at that stage of their life. There was a gray head, orange and a very light reddish orange headed one. Curly, Larry and Moe is what I named them and this could be one of the three here. Their call and sound are very distinctive but I can not duplicate it but they will come if I make an odd bird sound like was on Tarzan when I was a young boy. I hope to get a shot of the male soon with that brilliant red head all the way to his bill.
