Having A Peek
This ended up being a tight 'shot' of the great grey owl as I cannot track flying birds very well. In the original image, the owl is close to the frame edge, as you see here, and there was nothing interesting behind it. Most of the cropping involved removing the entire right half of the image.
There were dark snow squalls happening in the distance on either side of that bright spot on the horizon, so I hoped the owl would fly high enough off its perch, and in the right direction, to get that colour in the background. The owl was kind enough to cooperate. There was no direct, bright light coming from the horizon due to cloud cover so the owl not as strongly backlit as it might otherwise have been, and I could get good detail in the plumage (no silhouetting).
