The Amazing Cricketer! (Explored January 21, 2024)
While walking a path through a small mangrove swamp, I came upon this green heron hunting in the open, on top of a lush green ground cover. I watched patiently as it moved stealthily and probed for its prey. After a few minutes, it struck and pulled out...a bland looking cricket. That was a minor letdown! No frog or fish or snake or lizard. It stayed on the hunt for a good length of time, plucking out another cricket every 5 - 10 minutes. It was still fun to watch and I was glad to have had the opportunity. Very little info on field crickets in the Caribbean, but it may be a Gryllis species, possibly
Gryllus bryanti.
