Northern Gannets Fencing (Explored August 24, 2023)

This is another example of northern gannets "billing" or “mutual fencing.” It may happen spontaneously when both birds from a mated pair are at their nest site and seems to happen regularly when one bird returns to the nest after feeding or when bringing nesting material. As I mention in my previous post, the two gannets will face each other, often touching the other bird's head or neck and calling. They then begin to shake their heads side to side with their bills clacking together. It is a neat behaviour to watch.
