The Gate Lodge at Combermere Abbey (Explored 13 February 2012 No 432)

We had a short holiday in this Lodge last Spring.

Combermere Abbey lies on the heritage rich borderlands of Cheshire and Shropshire. For over 850 years this historic estate has captured the imagination of many visitors – its magical setting with the large mere, verdant woods and parkland. Since the Dissolution in 1538, when Henry VIII closed the Cistercian monastery established in 1133, the Abbey and its lands have been home to only two families - the Cotton family whose most famous member, Sir Stapleton Cotton became the 1st Viscount Combermere, and the Crossley family, who have been its custodians since 1919.

Today, the estate, while smaller in size, is still in private ownership and during the past fifteen years a programme of restoration works has seen a renaissance in several of the listed buildings which had fallen into disuse. New businesses have breathed new life into it creating a vibrant community full of energy and enterprise.
