mary garden cover 01

Mary Garden (1874-1967) was one of the giants of the opera world, feted in France, Britain and the United States. She was the first woman to direct an opera house and sing leading roles at the same time in Chicago and created the role of Melisande in Debussy's opera 'Pelleas et Melisande'. She was a skilful manupulator of the media but was decorated by the French government for her work as a nurse in the First World War and for her promotion of French music in America she was given the Legion d'Honneur. A fascinating but elusive character.
