This very small Barn Owl, was sitting on a very narrow highway, with vehicles going by 70 mph or so, and the sun was setting, it was almost dark. I too was going way too fast as I happened to notice him out of the corner of my eye and I slammed on my brakes and skid to a halt on a barely 2 lane road. Grabbed my camera and jumped out of the car and he was so frightened he was afraid to even open his eyes. I took a couple of shots, and wanted to pick him up and take him to safety, but there was a semi coming up fast, so I jumped back in the car and by the time I found a place big enough to turn around, he was gone. I hope he was okay. I can still see him there in my minds eyes, so frightened by this big guy with the flash on my camera. It must have been pretty scary too see. I don't know where his mother was, but she should have been ashamed allowing her child to play that close to the road? :^)
