Chicago Workers Collaborative
Workers practice filling out wage claims
Workers and community labor leaders attended an in-depth training in the Back of the Yards/Englewood area of Chicago, to learn how to file complaints under a new state law which cracks down on employers who steal their workers' wages. The law, SB3568, is one of the the toughest in the nation, which combats the mounting wave of wage-theft (employers not paying workers for their labor). A study released by the University of Illinois-Chicago in April 2010 found that Chicago-area workers are losing $7.3 million in wages every week due to wage-theft (www.urbaneconomy.org). The training was led by the Working Hands Legal Clinic (which drafted the law), and the three Worker Centers which together make us Just Pay for All: Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, Latino Union of Chicago, and the Chicago Workers' Collaborative.
