A Streamline Moderne Villa of Clinker Bricks - Thornbury

Built in a ribbon development along a tramline during the 1930s, this clinker brick Streamline Moderne Art Deco villa in the Melbourne suburb of Thornbury is much larger than some of its neighbours, and unlike many which are maisonettes, it is not semi-detached. The choice of clinker brick, the Art Deco swirls on the wrought-iron vestibule grille, "waterfall windows", flat roofed vestibule canopy and the rounded edging of the porch canopy are typical of the uncluttered lines of Australian Art Deco architecture in the late 30s, just before the Second World War. Even the wrought-iron house number above the door of the enclosed vestibule is very Art Deco in design.

The whole house is surrounded by a garden of exotic ferns, magnolias, cacti and perennials. The garden path and garden beds are all original from when the garden was set out in the 1930s.

At the time of photographing, this house had just been put up for sale. I do hope that the new owners (whomever they may be) keep this charming villa and do not buy the property for the size of block alone and build one or two souless modern townhouses in its stead. I thought I had better photograph it just in case the latter comes to fruition!
