A Mid Victorian Block Fronted Villa - Coburg

This smart mid Victorian single storey villa in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Coburg is block fronted (meaning it is built of wood, but the wood is cut so as to mimic brick).

Built between the 1870s and the 1880s, the middle-class owners of this villa were determined that they were able to afford the respectability of brick, even if they couldn't really! The house, with its four chimneys is set back from the street, amid a lovely garden, including a well clipped arbour. The villa is quite substantial in size, has beautiful wooden fretwork under the eave of the bull nosed verandah and lovely sash windows. It also maintains its original slate tile roof.

A house like this would have suited a large Victorian family of the middle or upper-middle classes who could afford servants that gracious Victorian domestic happiness required.
