Stairwell Window and Shingling Detail of a Large Arts and Crafts Villa - Prahran

Built around the turn of the Twentieth Century this large Edwardian villa in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran has been built in the reformist style of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Such houses in almost perfect condition are becoming more or a rarity.

Featuring casement windows with Art Nouveau stained glass, the red brick villa uses a large amount of shingling, including a thick column of shingling runs almost the entire length of the villa's middle both above and below the stained glass feature windows in the stairwell, ending in an upside down funnel shape above the double glass front doors.

It is a well proportioned house and would have suited a larger sized Edwardian family of comfortable means who would have lived in Prahran in the early years of the Twentieth Century.

Today, the house has a new lease of life as a community centre run by a local Catholic group.
