"Avenue Court" - Victoria Avenue, Albert Park

The 'Avenue Court' apartment complex in Victoria Avenue, Albert Park was designed by the prominent Victorian architect, Illiffe Gordon Anderson in 1934. It is an example of Functionalism architecture, so popular in the interwar period.

The building is a three storey block of nine residential flats. Built of brick, "Avenue Court" has a rendered façade which features unusual overlapping curved balcony planter boxes. The stylised wrought-iron balustrading features horizontal bars accented with short sections of flat bars on the vertical supports, an Art Deco motif carried onto the front fence and gate.

Amazingly, the building has retained all its original external decorative elements, and has survived the many renovations and "improvements" that so many apartment blocks have suffered over the years.
