The Luck of the Irish

A four-leaf clover is considered lucky because of its extreme rarity (only about 1 in 10,000), its association with ancient legends, and the symbolism of its four leaves. Ancient Druids believed it was a powerful charm to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. According to tradition, the four leaves represent faith, hope, love, and luck.

Now, I know that none of these clovers have four leaves, yet nonetheless, my Great Grandmother always called this Edwardian Art Nouveau 18 karat brooch studded with seed pearls that was given to her by my Great Grandfather, her lucky charm. The brooch was bought from Liberty of London in Regent Street, and was made by one of their artisan jewellers, so I suspect that it is a unique piece of jewellery, as they so often were being exponents of Style Liberty - the British Arts and Crafts Movement. I have certainly never seen another like it in my travels.

The theme for Looking Close on Friday for Friday 28th of November is "lucky charm", so I immediately thought of my Great Grandmother's Art Nouveau lucky charm. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
