Paddington and Scout Entertain Bartie Bristle

*Knock. Knock. Knock.*

SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy who is at the front door?"

PADDY: "I\'m not sure, Scout."

SCOUT: "Daddy says that we are not to open the door to strangers." *Puts paw to mouth in concern.*

PADDY: "Hullo! Who is at the door please?"

VOICE FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR: "Hullo Paddy! It\'s me, dear Paddington, Bartie Bristle!"

PADDY: "Oh Bartie!"

SCOUT: "It could be a trick, Paddy!" *Tugs on Paddy\'s sleeve.* "Like the Big Bad Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood!" *Nods and looks concerned.*

PADDY: "Nonsense Scout! There are no Big Bad Wolves here! Only Monsieur Charles and we know he is a good wolf and a vegetarian!" *Opens front door.* "Bartie! How do you do? Please, do come inside."

BARTIE: "Oh thank you Paddy! How do you do? Hullo little Scout! Do you remember me from when you and little Peter visited me at my very special workshop?"

SCOUT: *Shyly.* "I do, Bartie! You fixed mijn beste vriend Peter’s porch swing made of clothes pegs when it broke."

BARTIE: "I did! How good you remember! Is it still working?"

SCOUT: "Oh yes, Bartie! It is just fine! My friend Aurora, mijn beste vriend Peter and Paddy’s best vriend Oleg were sitting on it just a few weeks ago."

BARTIE: "Excellent! Excellent! I am glad it is still working! When I fix something, I don’t want it to break again."

SCOUT: "I’m sorry Bartie, but I was scared you might have been a Big Bad Wolf in disguise as you." *Giggles in an embarrassed way*

BARTIE: *Chuckles good naturedly.* "Well as you can see, Scout, it really is me! " *Smiles.*

SCOUT: "I’m so glad it is you, Bartie!"

PADDY: "Daddy received your note that you were coming visiting soon, so he has the kettle on. Come and join us on the sofa in the sunroom and we will have some tea."

BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Paddy."

*PADDY, SCOUT and BARTIE scramble up onto the sofa whilst DADDY puts out tea things and fills the teapot with tea.*

DADDY: "Welcome dear Bartie! I knew you were coming, but we wasn’t expecting you quite so soon. I thought you were going hiking first."

BARTIE: "Oh I was, Mr. Daddy."

DADDY: "Oh there is no need for the Mister, Bartie. Just Daddy will be fine. Everybear calls me Daddy."

BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Daddy. Well, I was going to go hiking, but it has been so horribly hot around Europe with record high temperatures that I decided it was easier to use the magical portal at Mummy Marian’s house and come straight here. I did stop to see Mummy Marian and Peter and Oleg, but they were on holidays at the time, but some other nice bears who live with Mummy Marian who didn’t go on holiday showed me the magical portal, and… well here I am."

PADDY: "Oh yes, we heard about the hot temperatures in Europe on the telly! It must have been so hot in your plush coat!"

BARTIE: "Oh it was, Paddy! Horribly hot!"

PADDY: "Well, it is winter time here in Australia, and whilst it doesn’t snow like it does in winter at the special Teddy Bear Repair Shop with the Teddy Bear Ladies, it is cooler here."

BARTIE: "Oh, that is excellent Paddy!"

SCOUT: "And now that you are here, you can relax and enjoy your holidays! Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down for joy.*

BARTIE: "Well, I must confess, little Scout, that I am looking forward to relaxing for a little bit, and not doing any repairs."

PADDY: "May I offer you some tea, Bartie?" *Holds teapot aloft.*

BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Paddy!"

This beautiful nursery rhyme tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated and feature different nursery rhymes including: "Ding Dong Dell Pussy’s in the Well", "The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe", "Old King Cole", "Pat a Cake Pat a Cake Baker’s Man", "Little Tommy Tittlemouse", "See Saw Margery Daw" and &This Little Pig Went to Market" amongst others. The set I acquired from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set and a 1920s faerie tale tea set. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt and mustard spoons.

Bartie Bristle shares his time living part time in a very special teddy bear shop with all his friends, and part time with Mummy Marian Marian Kloon (on and off) in the Netherlands. His stories can be read in the book "Bartie Bristle and Other Stories" by The Teddy Bear Ladies Julie Tatchell & Amanda Middleditch. Whilst gaining a huge following for skilfully bringing people’s treasured childhood bears and soft toys back to life, alongside their specialist repair work Julie and Amanda also designed and crafted their very own trademark bear, Bartie Bristle. Bartie Bristle is hand-made by Merrythought in England from short-pile sandy-gold mohair plush and soft toffee-coloured velvet, and features embroidered stitch detailing, along with a hand-sewn nose and smile that captures the character’s unique charm and cheerful expression. My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
