Paddington and the Serious Conversation

PADDY: "Hullo Scout! Hullo Rosie!"

SCOUT and ROSIE: "Oh! Hullo Paddy!"

PADDY: "What are you doing?"

SCOUT: "We are getting dressed up for mijn beste vriend Peter!"

ROSIE: "Who also happens to be mijn handsome prins Peter!"

SCOUT: "I am wearing a pretty blue tutu because I know mijn beste vriend likes the colour blue!"

ROSIE: "And I am wearing an orange tutu because it is royal colour in the Netherlands, and mijn Prins thinks I am as pretty as Queen Maxima!"

SCOUT: "Peter has decided that he doesn't want to go on holiday in the campervan with Mummy Marian, Jan, Fenre and your beste vriend Oleg!"

ROSIE: "He has seen Germany before and he has decided that he would prefer to come and stay here with us."

SCOUT: "I am soooo excited!" *Trembles with excitement.* "We are going to play hide-and-seek together! I can't wait!"

ROSIE: "And mijn handsome prins Peter and I are going to have lots of snuffly kisses! At least a honderdduizend berenkusjes, Paddy!" *Blushes red beneath pink woollen plush.*

PADDY: "Yes, mijn beste vriend Oleg told me that Peter has decided not to on on holiday with him in the campervan, and I wanted to have a serious chat with you about that."

ROSIE: "With us, Paddy?"

SCOUT: "A serious chat, Paddy?" *Concerned.* "That does sound... well... serious."

PADDY: "It is. Come Scout and Rosie. Let's sit down here on the sofa." *Climbs up on sofa.*

SCOUT and ROSIE: *Clamber up on the sofa after Paddy.*

PADDY: *Wraps arms around Scout and Rosie.* "Now, I know how excited you are to see Peter, and to play with him and kiss him. We all love having Peter come to stay."

SCOUT: "Oh yes, Paddy! He is mijn beste vriend!"

ROSIE: "And my handsome and brave prins!"

PADDY: "I know. Now, do you remember last week when Daddy had a very upset tummy and had to lie down here on this very sofa and rest because he felt very sick?"

SCOUT: "Oh yes Paddy! We all comforted him!"

ROSIE: "I kissed his tummy better with my little bear kisses."

PADDY: "Well, this trip to Germany in the campervan with Jan, Fenre and Peter and Oleg is very special to Mummy Marian, because like Daddy, she has not been well."

SCOUT: "Oh yes, we know, Paddy!"

ROSIE: "We were worried!"

PADDY: "And that is why this trip is special for Mummy Marian. It is a reward for getting better and she is so looking forward to travelling around. She really wants Peter to come as well, as she enjoys it when he has adventures. How do you think Daddy might have felt if we were not there last week to give him big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses?"

SCOUT: "Oh he would have been sad, Paddy!"

ROSIE: "And felt sick, Paddy!"

PADDY: "Exactly! And Mummy Marian will feel sad if Peter doesn't travel on the campervan with her to Germany. Mijn beste vriend Oleg will be sad that Peter is not going with them too."

SCOUT: "But Paddy, Oleg is always complaining about Peter!"

PADDY: "I know that, Scout, but that is only because Peter worries Oleg sometimes because he does some things that could be dangerous, and Oleg doesn't want him to get hurt. Now, do you want Mummy Marian and mijn beste vriend Oleg to be sad?"

SCOUT and ROSIE: "Oh no, Paddy!"

PADDY: "Good! Then I hope you will understand why I am saying that Peter cannot come and stay here with us and play with you, Scout, or kiss you, Rosie, until he has been on the trip with Mummy Marian, Jan, Fenre and mijn beste vriend Oleg."

SCOUT: "But... but Paddy! I want mijn beste vriend Peter to come and play hide-and-seek with me!"

ROSIE: "And I want to give mijn prins Peter a honderdduizend berenkusjes, Paddy!"

PADDY: "And you will both get your wishes, after Peter fulfils his duties. We bears all have very special jobs to take care of our Mummies and Daddies and comfort them when they are sad or sick. Peter still needs to give Mummy Marian lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses! He also needs to make her smile and laught with his adventures and escapades!"

SCOUT: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.*

ROSIE: "Yes I see." *Puts paw to mouth.*

PADDY: "So, can both of you be good, brave and kind bears and let Peter go travelling with Mummy Marian, under the proviso that when he gets back, he will come to stay with us and you can play together then?"

SCOUT: "It will be hard, Paddy, because I love mijn beste vriend soooo much!"

ROSIE: "And I love mijn prins Peter to the stars and back again!"

PADDY: "I know, but I promise that this is really for the best for everybody and everybear!"

SCOUT and ROSIE: "Alright Paddy!"

PADDY: "That's very good of you both, and you are such kind and selfless bears! Thank you so much! Let me give you a big little bear hug of thanks from Mummy Marian and mijn beste vriend Oleg!" *Pulls Scout and Rosie close and cuddles them.*

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464... and their Mummy Marian Kloon (on and off) . Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Peter loves Rosie and Rosie loves Peter, so they have become prince and princess to one another. Oleg and Paddy are very similar and have become best friends too. Peter and Oleg have packed their bags as you can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54607130847/in/datepos... or in the first comment below. However after packing, Peter has changed his mind, and Mummy Marian and Oleg are both so disappointed that he isn't going with them.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
